It was seemingly a close call seeing that the Revenant earned several awards including one for best actor (Yes, finally for Leo,) however Spotlight came in for the win, beating out "The Big Short, The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn AND Room.
Directed by Tom McCarthy, the widely acclaimed movie is set in 2001. Spotlight tells the true story of The Boston Globe investigative unit that broke the story of widespread sexual abuse by Catholic priests in the area.
The Spotlight team took their winning moment to shine a light on the importance of investigative journalism and the courageous efforts of those portrayed by the Boston Globe in this true life story as well as the film’s phenomenal ensemble.
